What Observability Does

Observability combines logs, metrics, and traces into a unified view. It lets engineers ask questions about system behavior without deploying new code. It surfaces patterns across services.

Observability is built from signals emitted by the running system. It depends on instrumentation. It answers behavioral questions. What is the system doing. How is it performing. Where is it failing.

These are real operational needs. Observability addresses them. It tells you how the system behaves. It does not tell you what the system is.

What Identity Requires

Identity defines the composition of an AI system at the moment of execution. It is not derived from behavioral signals. It is declared before behavior occurs.

Identity does not depend on instrumentation. It does not require the system to emit signals about itself. It exists as an independent record of what was assembled.

Identity must be verifiable by parties who never observed the system running. Observability requires access to the system's own telemetry. Logs do not establish identity. Neither does the infrastructure built on top of them.

Why They Are Different Categories

Observability and identity operate at different layers. Observability operates at the behavioral layer. Identity operates at the composition layer. One monitors what the system does. The other establishes what the system was.

Better observability does not produce identity. Richer dashboards do not change the structural category. More granular metrics do not declare composition. They describe behavior with greater precision.

AI systems do not have identity. Observability does not create it. Observability monitors a system that has no declared composition. It makes the absence visible. It does not fill it.

Observability monitors system behavior. Identity establishes what the system was. These are not the same category.
